Sloth: Resisting the Demands of Love – Hebrews 6:7-12

This is the second sermon in the series: Seven Capital Vices and Divine Remedies. It examines the troubling vice of sloth. At first glance, many Christians might conclude, “I don’t have to worry about his one. I’m too busy to be lazy.” But, like all the vices, physical laziness is a mere outer symptom. The root problem, sloth, lies within, in the inner self. Sloth can be defined as a failure of effort that comes from a lack of love. Sloth exists when our love for God is too small and our love for ourselves and the world is too great. Sloth is a spiritual malady that can affect anything and everything in our relationship with Christ, family, the church, and the world. What is the antidote? Diligence. The English word comes from the Latin root diligere. This sermon helps us understand how growing in love for Christ can cause spiritual sloth to dissipate, thus making us zealous, faithful servants of our Lord and King.
