Luke 2:1-7 & Philippians 2: 5-11 – From Humility in Bethlehem to Exaltation in Heaven

This season of the year celebrates the glorious truth of the babe born in Bethlehem, our Savior Jesus, who temporarily laid aside the glories of heaven to become one of us human residents in a fallen, troubled world. It is truly one of the most profound examples of humility ever! As Thomas Watson says, “He stripped himself of the robes of glory and covered himself with the rags of our humanity.” But even further, as Philippians 2:8 explains, he humbled himself “to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

Because, in order to redeem the world, God’s Son condescended so low, the Almighty Father was pleased to raise up his Son and exalt him to the highest place of honor in heavenly glory: (Philippians 2:9-11):  Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

This sermon demonstrates the two corresponding themes: Christ’s example of humility is our rule of life, and Christ’s example of humility is our road to glory.
