It’s no secret—ours is an age of relativism and compromise. We love the Bible because it is God’s own holy Word. We read and study it because we love the Lord and desire to delight in him, and for him to delight in us. We long to obey the commands of our Lord’s Word, yet sometimes we find ourselves in difficult situations where obedience seems hurtful, harmful, or even dangerous. Sadly, we are sometimes tempted to choose the easy way out. We are prone to invent ways to avoid our duty to the Lord, vainly believing we can somehow justify our compromise.
Saul took this path when the Lord commanded him to destroy the wicked Amalekites. Instead, Saul chose to spare some of the spoils for sacrifice and kept King Agag alive. But Saul’s use of an “end justifies the means” philosophy failed—it cost him his kingdom. And it won’t work for us either.
This sermon offers a valuable life lesson for us all: Obedience Is Better.
